Prime minister Abiy Ahmed, UN secretary General Antonio Guterres and the AUC chairperson Musa Fakhi Mehmet have inaugurated the Africa Hall in the UNECA today.

The Africa hall is a historical venue since 1961 at the time of Emperor Haile Selassie I, where the signing of the charter of the organization of African Unity took place.

Since then, the hall served as an important platform for discussions and conferences among the founding fathers of the ‘organization of the African Unity’ today’s ‘African Union’.

Speaking on the occasion, prime minister of Ethiopia, Abiy Ahmed pointed out that the renovated hall stands as testament of hope, resilience and unity where the pan African cooperation has been achieved.

As Peace and security play a pivotal role in fostering the development and prosperity of the continent, the Prime Minister emphasized the necessity of implementing innovative indigenous solutions to pave the way for a brighter future for the region.

‘Africa hall stands as a symbol of African voice, reminding the need to reform our collective action and responsibility’, Abiy Ahmed stated. He also reiterated Ethiopia’s commitment to ensure Africa’s permanent seat in the UNSC.

UN Secretary General, Antonio Guterres on his part applauded the government of Ethiopia and the UNECA for the execution of renovating the historical venue. He described the hall as a symbol of unity, and a bridge between Africa’s past and future.

‘As Africa hall stands as a testament of the continent’s aspirations, heads of states and governments need to renew pledge and work for the people of Africa in order to move forward towards unity, peace and prosperity,’ the secretary general implied.

Africa hall embarked on a new beginning for Africa by signing the charter of the OAU in 1963, according to the Executive director of UNECA, Claver Gatete.

He pointed out the through the AfCFTA and other initiatives within the continent, the vision of the founding fathers of today’s AU will be achieved by the virtue of integrating Africa.
