Awash Fentale Fault Line: Tremors Continue, More Earthquakes Possible

An earthquake with a magnitude of 4.6 on the Richter scale has struck near Awash Fentale, Ethiopia, around 6:10:09 PM today, sending tremors that were felt in various parts of Addis Ababa.

Dr. Elias Lewi, Director of Geophysics and Space Science at Addis Ababa University, confirmed the event to EBC Cyber, noting that this is the second tremor felt in the capital city within 24 hours.

"The possibility of further earthquake events remains as long as the fault line movement in the Awash Fentale area continues," stated Dr. Elias Lewi, Director of Geophysics and Space Science at Addis Ababa University.

He emphasized that while the location of earthquakes can be predicted, pinpointing the exact time of occurrence remains a challenge, even with current scientific advancements and global experience. "We can predict where earthquakes will happen, but not when," Dr. Lewi explained.

The epicenter of the earthquake was located in the same area as the previous tremor, near Awash Fentale. Dr. Elias explained that the seismic activity in the region has not yet subsided.

While the intensity of the recent tremor was relatively low, Dr. Elias cautioned that the ongoing movement of the fault line between Awash Fentale and Sabure town could lead to further earthquake events.
