The Nile River Basin Cooperative Framework Agreement (CFA), has entered into force today, October 13, 2024. This historic achievement, announced by the Ministry of Water and Energy, marks a momentous occasion for the region.

Honorable Dr. Eng. Habtamu Itefa, Minister at the Ministry, expressed his profound gratitude and congratulations to the Governments and Peoples of the Nile Basin countries for their unwavering commitment to this landmark agreement. "This is a testament to our collective resolve to cooperate for the benefit of all," he remarked.

The entry into force of the CFA paves the way for the establishment of the Nile River Basin Commission (NRBC). This crucial body will serve as the cornerstone of cooperative efforts, ensuring the sustainable management and safeguarding of the Nile River for present and future generations.

The CFA addresses historical imbalances in accessing the Nile's waters, guaranteeing that all Nile Basin countries can equitably benefit from this shared resource. The Agreement acknowledges the legitimate needs of each state and commits them to the equitable sharing of water resources, fostering sustainable development, regional integration, and cooperation.

"We must utilize the Nile's resources not only for today but for the generations to come," emphasized Minister Habtamu. "The CFA ensures the protection of the Nile and its ecosystems, utilizing its waters in a manner that safeguards the future."

He urged all Nile Basin states to fully embrace the CFA and uphold its principles with the utmost integrity. Recognizing the invaluable support of the international community throughout this journey of cooperation, Minister Habtamu expressed his gratitude and emphasized the continued importance of their partnership as the region embarks on this new chapter of collaboration.
