Ethiopia and South Sudan are poised to engage in discussions aimed at strengthening their comprehensive cooperation, as highlighted by the recent consultations held between Ambassador Redwan Hussein, the Director General of the National Intelligence and Security Service, and a delegation led by Lt. Gen. Akech Tong Alu, the Director General of the Internal Security Bureau of South Sudan.
Both countries, known for their strong historical and cultural ties, are looking forward to enhancing multi-faceted cooperation that will shape their shared future. There is an optimistic outlook on the development of road infrastructure, which is expected to boost economic benefits and improve connectivity between the peoples of Ethiopia and South Sudan. The focus will also be on addressing potential security and safety concerns through information exchange and collaborative efforts.
As the National Intelligence and Security Service shared, plans are in motion to further enhance cooperation in combating the illegal trafficking of weapons, money, and people along the border, as well as in countering terrorist activities. This proactive approach aims to foster regional stability, showcasing a commitment to working closely together.
Additionally, there is a strong emphasis on building human capacity, with South Sudanese intelligence and security leaders having previously undergone training at the National Intelligence and Security Service. Future discussions are expected to expand on ways to bolster this cooperation.
During their visit to Addis Ababa, the South Sudanese delegation expressed admiration for the rapid developments and changes in the city, indicating a willingness to learn and collaborate. Lt. Gen. Akech Tong Alu, who has been at the helm of the Internal Security Bureau since September 2017, is determined to enhance cooperation with Ethiopia in the realms of intelligence, security, and safety, setting the stage for fruitful partnerships moving forward.
