19 Renewable Energy Plants Boost Ethiopia's Electricity Production

Ethiopia is generating electricity from 19 renewable energy plants including the Grand Ethiopian Renaissance Dam (GERD) and Aisha II wind power plants, which started generating power with turbines installed before their construction was completed..

These plants include: Qoqa, Awash II, Awash III, Fincha, Melka Wakena, Tis Abay II, Gilgel Gibe I, Tekeze, Gilgel Gibe II, Beles, Amerti Neshe, Ashgoda, Adama I, Adama II, Gilgel Gibe III, Repi, Genale Dawa 3, the Grand Ethiopian Renaissance Dam, and Aisha II.

Fisseha Getachew, Public Relations and Communication Manager of Ethiopian Electric Power, stated that these power plants became operational between 1952 and 2022 and have a combined annual generation capacity of 6,879 megawatts or 23,059 gigawatt-hours.

He also clarified that the generation capacity and annual power output of the GERD and Aisha II currently reflect only the power generated by the turbines currently in operation.

On the other hand, he announced that Tis Abay I, Aluto Langano, and Aba Samuel have currently stopped generating power FBC reported.

He also mentioned that the construction of Aisha, Assela, the GERD, and Koysha is underway, and explained that work is being done to expand Aluto's steam power generation.

He stated that upon completion of the partially operational Grand Renaissance Dam, Aisha wind power plant, Koysha hydropower plant, and Assela wind power plant, an additional 7,240 megawatts of annual power generation will be achieved.

This, he indicated, will increase the current generation capacity of 5,656 megawatts by more than 12,000 megawatts.
