Ethiopian athlete Tigist Assefa claimed she could have won the gold in Paris Olympics women marathon Sunday morning, but the lethal elbow kick from the Dutch athlete Sifan Hassan blocked her effort.
On a press conference organized Sunday by the Paris 2024 Olympics Committee, a journalist asked Tigist this question. “I was wondering if you could explain in your own words what happened during the contact with Hassan [Sifan] in the final 400 meters.?”
Replying to the journalist through a translator, Tigist said, “What happened when it reached 400 meters to the finish line was what I didn’t expect. Since it was a marathon, there is overtiredness. I wish that had not happened. I could have taken the gold home, had Sifan not pushed me that way. But it was not God’s will. And I’m happy for she won it.”
