UN Envoy Lamamra Expresses Cautious Optimism for Sudan Peace after Talks

UN Special Envoy Ramtane Lamamra has expressed cautious optimism regarding a potential peace settlement in Sudan, following meetings with Sudanese officials in Port Sudan and Addis Ababa. While acknowledging the ongoing stalemate in the 20-month-long conflict, Lamamra reaffirmed the UN's commitment to supporting Sudan's transition to peace, stability, and democratic governance.

He emphasized the need for a Sudanese-led political process inclusive of women, youth, and marginalized groups, stressing the urgency of addressing their suffering.

Lamamra's discussions included meetings with Lt. Gen. Abdelfattah El Burhan and representatives of the Rapid Support Forces. He firmly rejected a military solution, urging all parties to prioritize the needs of the Sudanese people and calling for an immediate ceasefire. He also appealed to international and regional actors to increase pressure on the warring factions and their foreign arms suppliers.

According to Dabanga Sudan, as the conflict's second anniversary approaches, Lamamra voiced hope for a renewed commitment to peace, stating that the Sudanese people deserve a peaceful resolution.
