Experts Commend Government on Sea Outlet Push for National Interest

The pursuit of sea access is a matter of national interest for which the government deserves commendation, according to architect and politician Yohannes Mekonnen. This was revealed during EBC's 'Today's Ethiopia panel discussion'.

The discussion explored the importance of safeguarding national interests through shared values.

Yohannes Mekonnen, who presented the forum's discussion paper, argued that protecting national interest requires highlighting the many values that unite citizens rather than those that divide them. He criticized the political structure of the past three decades as having been more divisive than unifying.

Yohannes suggested that national consultation and transitional justice are crucial for narrowing differences and fostering unity. He stressed that national interest transcends the government, political parties, and individual leaders, framing it as the legacy of past generations, the hope for the future, and the lifeblood of the present.

Zerihun Megersa, another participant, praised the diplomatic steps recently taken to protect national interests, noting they represent a commendable shift in approach. Zerihun contended that a multi-faceted approach is necessary for safeguarding national interest, citing Ethiopia's membership in BRICS as an example that provides opportunities for consultation and collaboration with powerful nations. He added that efforts underway to address the sea outlet question, which he noted was unimaginable 30 years ago, should not be understated.

Ethiopia's membership in the United Nations Security Council and the African Union Peace and Security Council were also highlighted as indicators of the country's ongoing efforts to achieve its national interests.
