AU Peace, Security Council Welcomes Ethiopia, Strengthening Continental Peace Efforts

Ethiopia's election to the African Union's Peace and Security Council for the 2025-2027 term significantly boosts its regional influence and commitment to continental peace and security. The move, announced following the AU Executive Council's 46th Ordinary Session, positions Ethiopia to play a leading role in addressing critical peace and security challenges across Africa. According to Ministry of Foreign Affairs spokesperson Ambassador Nebiat Getachew, this election underscores Ethiopia's long-standing dedication to peacekeeping, building on its contributions to missions in Rwanda, Sierra Leone, and South Sudan.

The AU Peace and Security Council, comprising 15 critical members, serves as a pivotal body overseeing peace and security issues across the continent. Ambassador Nebiat emphasized Ethiopia's longstanding commitment to promoting peace and stability not only within Africa but also in global peacekeeping efforts dating back to its involvement with the League of Nations and the United Nations.

He highlighted Ethiopia’s notable contributions to peacekeeping operations, detailing its active participation in missions in places such as Rwanda, Sierra Leone, and South Sudan.

“Ethiopia's active engagement underscores its dedication to the causes of peace,” he stated.

The spokesperson also touched on the broader objective of the AU’s Agenda 2063, emphasizing collective efforts toward lasting peace and security in Africa.

Moreover, Ambassador Nebiat addressed the pressing issue of Africa's inadequate representation in the UN Security Council, echoing sentiments from numerous African states advocating for a prominent voice in global affairs.

He acknowledged the unified efforts of African nations to achieve rightful representation, stating, “It’s time for a fair voice for Africa in international decisions.” Ethiopia’s membership in the Peace and Security Council marks a critical step toward realizing this vision, ENA learnt.
