Ministry Calls for a Halt to Efforts to Turn the Horn of Africa into a Conflict Zone

The Ministry of Foreign Affairs has stated that efforts to make the Horn of Africa a conflict zone should be halted. Ambassador Nebiat Getachew, spokesperson for the Ministry, made this clear in his weekly briefing on Ethiopia’s current foreign relations and diplomacy matters.

In his remarks, Ambassador Nebiat emphasized that Ethiopia's foreign policy prioritizes neighboring countries, working towards regional peace and cooperation. He highlighted Ethiopia’s continued efforts to foster peaceful and development-focused relations with its neighbors.

The Ambassador noted that Ethiopia firmly believes in resolving conflicts through peaceful dialogue and reiterated the country’s commitment to this principle. He further stated that the ongoing efforts to destabilize the Horn of Africa and turn it into a theater of conflict must come to an end.

Additionally, Ambassador Nebiat mentioned that Ethiopia is preparing to actively participate in the 79th General Assembly of the United Nations, scheduled to take place late September 2024. He underscored Ethiopia’s engagement in the Assembly for the past 79 years and its commitment to addressing both its national interests and the interests of Africa during the upcoming session.

Ethiopia will also participate in the BRICS foreign ministers’ meeting on the sidelines of the main assembly, as well as hold bilateral discussions with member countries of the African Union Mission in Somalia (AMISOM). The Ambassador stated that these meetings will focus on safeguarding Ethiopia’s national interests and strengthening bilateral ties with various organizations.

In conclusion, the Ministry reaffirmed Ethiopia’s dedication to peaceful regional cooperation, conflict resolution through dialogue, and a robust engagement in international forums.
