Ethiopian Deputy Prime Minister Temesgen Tiruneh has emphasized the importance of collaborating with successful agricultural nations like Brazil.
Speaking at the Second Brazil-Africa Conference on Food Security, Fighting Hunger and Rural Development, Temesgen highlighted the transformative potential of agriculture when backed by robust research and development initiatives.
Brazil, recognized as a global leader in agricultural exports, has achieved remarkable growth through sustainable practices and innovative farming techniques.
Temesgen’s comments came after a field survey of Brazil's agricultural sector, where he and his delegation observed firsthand the successful strategies employed by the South American nation. The visit took them to Petrolina, a region known for its lush rainforests and advanced agricultural research, located approximately 1,547 kilometers from Brazil's capital, Brasília.
During their exploration, the Ethiopian delegation witnessed various agricultural activities spearheaded by Embrapa, Brazil's agricultural research corporation that has been instrumental in the country's farming advancements for over four decades.
They observed effective water management practices, resilient livestock breeds capable of enduring desertification, and the cultivation of irrigated fruits.
Additionally, the delegation noted the diversity of fish species being sustainably harvested in the region.
Temesgen pointed out that Ethiopia has already begun to yield impressive results in its agricultural sector through strategic policy support and rigorous monitoring. By prioritizing special procedures and focusing on the development of its agricultural potential, Ethiopia is on a path to enhance food security and rural development significantly.
The Deputy Prime Minister expressed optimism about implementing the valuable lessons learned from Brazil's agricultural success.
"We will compile and implement the useful experiences we have seen," he stated, indicating a commitment to adopting best practices that could lead to rapid advancements in Ethiopia's agricultural landscape.
As Ethiopia seeks to bolster its agricultural framework, collaboration with countries like Brazil could pave the way for sustainable growth, increased food production, and improved livelihoods for millions.
The insights gained from this partnership may play a crucial role in transforming Ethiopia into an agricultural powerhouse shortly.
