Ethiopian President Taye Atseke Selassie visited the ongoing corridor development work in Dire Dawa, where he engaged with local drivers and discussed the renovation of the city’s historic railway.
The visit, which took place today, underscored the government's commitment to improving infrastructure and supporting the livelihoods of public transport providers in the region.
During his visit, President Taye met with over 550 drivers who are part of various public transport cooperatives in Dire Dawa.
The discussions, which lasted until 4 PM, focused on the challenges faced by these drivers as they work to provide essential services to the community.
The President expressed his satisfaction with the cooperative's efforts and emphasised the importance of their role in facilitating transportation for residents.
"We must recognise the dedication of our drivers who work tirelessly, often away from their families, to keep our city moving," President Taye stated.
He highlighted that the government is committed to ensuring these workers receive adequate support, especially in terms of health services.
"It is crucial that we provide free medical services to those who are serving our communities, particularly for mothers raising children and those separated from their families due to work commitments."
The discussions also touched upon the ongoing renovation of the 100-year-old railway that runs through Dire Dawa.
This historic railway not only serves as a vital transport link but also symbolises the rich heritage of Ethiopia’s transportation network. The renovation efforts aim to modernise this infrastructure, making it safer and more efficient for both passengers and freight services.
In addition to addressing transport issues, President Taye's visit aligns with broader governmental initiatives aimed at urban development and economic growth in Dire Dawa.
The corridor development project is expected to boost local commerce and improve connectivity within the city, ultimately enhancing the quality of life for its residents.
Local authorities have been tasked with ensuring that the development projects are executed efficiently and transparently. Residents are hopeful that these initiatives will lead to job creation and improved public services, fostering a more vibrant community.
As part of his commitment to transparency and engagement, President Taye plans to continue these dialogues with local stakeholders.
"We must work together to build a better future for Dire Dawa. The voices of our drivers and citizens are essential in shaping our policies,” he remarked.
The visit by President Taye Atseke Selassie marks a pivotal moment for Dire Dawa as it embarks on a journey of revitalisation and growth.
It was also noted that with a focus on infrastructure development and community welfare, the government aims to create a sustainable environment that benefits all residents.
