Ethiopia's dairy industry is experiencing a significant upswing, with milk production reaching an impressive 12 billion liters, doubling in just three years. Furthermore, the number of improved, crossbred dairy cattle has increased eightfold over the same period. This substantial progress is largely attributed to the "Bounty of the Basket" initiative, a program focused on modernizing dairy farming practices.
Key components of this initiative include enhancing cattle breeding techniques, improving the availability and quality of animal feed, and providing comprehensive training and capacity building for local farmers. According to ENA, complementing these efforts, the Ethiopian government is making strategic investments in essential infrastructure.
These investments include the development of liquid nitrogen production facilities, crucial for artificial insemination programs, and the establishment of new, modern dairy processing units. These infrastructure projects are designed to ensure the sustainability of the sector's rapid growth and to further increase the accessibility and consumption of dairy products throughout Ethiopia.
