Ethiopia and Cuba are united by a steadfast commitment of safeguarding their national sovereignty, unity, and dignity, said Cuban Ambassador to Ethiopia, Melién Alvarez
She nicknamed the nations as blood brothers during the 47th commemoration of Karamara Victory Day.
The event, held at the Ethio-Cuba Friendship Square here in Addis Ababa where she highlighted the deep historical ties and shared struggles between the two nations.
Ambassador Alvarez emphasized that the square holds profound significance for both Ethiopians and Cubans, as it stands as a tribute to the 163 Cuban soldiers who fought alongside Ethiopia during the Karamara War to defend the nation’s honor.
She noted that the enduring bond of brotherhood and solidarity between the two countries, forged during this pivotal period, remains strong even after five decades.
“The solidarity between Ethiopia and Cuba, built on shared sacrifices and mutual respect, continues to thrive and evolve,” Alvarez stated.
She called for continued collaboration and cooperation between the two nations, particularly in areas that empower youth and strengthen trade relations.
The ambassador also highlighted the importance of the two countries’ united stance in international forums, describing it as a testament to their shared values and a tribute to the sacrifices of their heroes. Quoting the late Cuban leader Fidel Castro, a close ally of Ethiopia, Alvarez recalled, “Without Africa, without its children, language, and cultural values, Cuba would not be where it is today.” She underscored the deep historical and cultural connections Cuba shares with Africa, particularly with Ethiopia.
The Karamara Victory Day commemorates Ethiopia’s triumph over the heavily armed forces of Ziyad Barre, who invaded Ethiopia in 1969 with the aim of establishing a greater Somalia. At the time, Ethiopia faced internal divisions and a transitional government, yet it managed to repel the invasion with the support of ideologically aligned nations, including Cuba, Yemen, and Russia.
This year’s 47th anniversary of the Karamara Victory was marked by a series of events at the Ethio-Cuba Friendship Square, attended by Ambassador Alvarez, Ethiopian veterans, and other dignitaries. The celebration served as a reminder of the enduring friendship and shared resolve between Ethiopia and Cuba to preserve their sovereignty and uphold their dignity on the global stage.
