Addis Ababa Unveils New Public Parks

The Addis Ababa City Administration has unveiled the construction of 27 new public recreational parks as part of its ambitious corridor development initiative.

This significant investment in green spaces promises to transform the capital into a vibrant hub for entertainment, tourism, and job creation, ultimately enriching the lives of its residents.

CEO of the Addis Ababa Public Recreation and Parks Management Corporation (PRPMC), Netsanet Daba, emphasized the transformative impact these parks will have on the community.

“These public recreational parks are more than just green spaces; they are vital areas that foster community engagement and attract tourists. We are committed to delivering high-caliber services that rival international standards, ensuring that every citizen can benefit from these facilities,” she stated.

The newly constructed parks are strategically designed to cater to diverse recreational needs, with plans for continuous monitoring and enhancement to ensure they meet community expectations.

“We are actively working to make these parks accessible to all neighborhoods, while also upgrading existing facilities,” Netsanet added.

Currently, there are over 57 public recreational parks under the city administration’s purview, with ongoing efforts to involve the private sector in their development and maintenance.

Highlighting the parks' popularity, Netsanet revealed that more than half a million citizens flocked to these recreational areas in just the first half of this year alone.

“This demonstrates a clear demand for green spaces within our city,” she noted, underscoring the importance of integrating leisure areas into urban planning.

While many services offered at these parks remain free, a nominal fee is collected from select facilities to sustain operations.

In the first half of the year, the corporation generated 60 million birr in revenue, which has also contributed to creating over 5,000 job opportunities for local residents.

She underscored that as Addis Ababa continues to grow and evolve, these new parks stand as a testament to the city’s commitment to fostering a healthier, more engaged community, one where nature and recreation play a central role in daily life.
