Moscow Opens Department Dedicated to Strengthening Russia-Africa Relations

Russia has opened a new Department for African Partnership within its Ministry of Foreign Affairs to strengthen strategic cooperation with Africa.

The opening ceremony was attended by African ambassadors, including Dr. Genet Teshome, Russia's Ambassador Plenipotentiary and Special Envoy to the Federal Democratic Republic of Ethiopia.

Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov, speaking at the launch event, stated that the new department will enhance the strategic partnership between Russia and Africa, focusing on strengthening bilateral relations. He recalled Russia's strong support for African countries in their anti-colonial struggle since the Soviet era, highlighting Russia's contribution to the implementation of the African Union's principles in combating neo-colonialism. He also reaffirmed Russia's continued support for Africa's permanent seat on the UN Security Council.

Lavrov mentioned that the new department will focus on several key areas, including educational opportunities, people-to-people exchanges, technology transfer, and trade relations, building upon the Russia-Africa forum and existing bilateral agreements.

Ambassador Tatyana Dovgalenko, appointed director of the new department, pledged unwavering efforts to foster strong relations between Africa and Russia. She noted that the new department joins three existing offices focused on Sub-Saharan Africa, the Middle East and North Africa, and now, African partnerships.

The ceremony also included the opening of a photo exhibition showcasing the historical ties between Russia and Africa, including visits by Pan-African leaders to Moscow and the Russia-Africa forum.
