Burundi Withdraws From Somalia Mission, Accusing Somalia of Betrayal

Burundi has withdrawn from the African Union Transition Mission in Somalia (ATMIS), citing betrayal and ingratitude over a dispute concerning troop allocation for the 2025 operation.

While Burundi requested 2,000 soldiers, Somalia only allocated 1,041, a move Burundi claims jeopardizes operational safety. This decision follows Burundi's significant contributions to the mission since 2007, including key operations like the recapture of Mogadishu's Defense Ministry.

Although Somalia expressed gratitude for Burundi's sacrifices in combating Al-Shabaab, the troop reduction has prompted Burundi's withdrawal, raising serious concerns about the mission's capacity to maintain security in Somalia.
