Ethiopia has doubled its annual coffee production from 500,000 tons in the last five years, boosting its efforts to become a major global coffee producer beyond its historical origins.
The coffee trade generated over $1.4 billion in revenue in the 2016 fiscal year, and the country is on track to hit $2 billion this year, according to Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed.
This growth is attributed to advancements in coffee farming, including modern irrigation systems and mechanized harvesting, resulting in yields as high as 60 quintals per hectare.
