Ethiopian Airlines, the continent's leading airline, is expanding its reach with the launch of Air Congo in the Democratic Republic of Congo.
This new airline, a joint venture with the Congolese government, marks another step in Ethiopian Airlines' ambitious strategy to dominate African skies.
Based in Kinshasa, Air Congo will initially operate two Boeing 737-800s leased from Ethiopian Airlines' fleet. These aircraft are undergoing a makeover, sporting a fresh paint job with Air Congo's new logo. According to Addis Insight, the airline will begin domestic flights in early December, with plans to expand to regional destinations in the future.
Ethiopian Airlines, holding a 49% stake in Air Congo, is providing crucial support, including aircraft and expertise. The airline's CEO, Mesfin Tasew, acknowledged the challenges of launching a new airline, particularly securing aircraft. "We took out two airplanes from our operation," he said, highlighting the commitment to Air Congo's success.
Air Congo's launch is part of Ethiopian Airlines' broader strategy to invest in and support regional carriers across Africa. This follows successful joint ventures in Togo, Zambia, and Malawi. While plans for a similar venture in Nigeria were put on hold, Air Congo demonstrates Ethiopian Airlines' continued commitment to African aviation.
The airline aims to expand Air Congo's fleet to six Boeing 737-800s within the first year, providing reliable air service in a market that has historically lacked consistent connectivity. This move is expected to boost the DRC's economy and empower local communities by increasing access to safe and reliable air travel.
Air Congo's launch is a significant milestone for African aviation, strengthening regional connections and paving the way for sustained growth. It represents a bold step towards a future where African airlines play a leading role in connecting the continent and driving economic development.
