PM Abiy Extends Meskel Holiday Greetings, Emphasizes Unity and Perseverance

Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed (PhD) has conveyed his best wishes to all Ethiopians celebrating the Meskel-Demera holiday, also known as the Feast of the Finding of the True Cross.

In his message, the Prime Minister highlighted that the Meskel celebration is not only a religious event but also a symbol of national unity, emphasizing its significance in two ways. He described the story of Queen Eleni's determination to find the True Cross as a powerful lesson in perseverance and the realization of dreams.

"Despite the challenges and darkness surrounding her, Queen Eleni’s dream of retrieving the cross was fulfilled. Her efforts and faith led her to uncover the True Cross in Jerusalem, changing history," Abiy said. He encouraged Ethiopians to draw inspiration from this story, believing that those who persevere in pursuing their dreams will eventually succeed, saying, "'Yoha!'—It is found. It came true."

Prime Minister Abiy further noted that the Meskel holiday exemplifies Ethiopia's unity through diversity. He explained that the growth from wood to torches, culminating in the Demera bonfire, represents the strength of national synergy, or "Medemer." He emphasized that the celebration brings together the various nations, nationalities, and peoples of Ethiopia, showcasing their shared roots and common identity.

Abiy also pointed out that the Meskel celebrations go beyond religious observance, reflecting the solidarity and resilience of Ethiopians. He urged communities to think of Ethiopia’s collective strength and diversity while gathering to light the Demera bonfire.

"Let us remember that Ethiopia is more than the sum of its parts, and by working together, we can build a great, prosperous, and respected nation," the Prime Minister said.

He concluded by encouraging all Ethiopians, especially the younger generation, to embrace the cultural and religious significance of the Meskel celebration, affirming that it is a powerful symbol of harmony, cooperation, and national unity.

Meskel, a key religious holiday for Ethiopian Orthodox Christians, will be marked by the ceremonial burning of the Demera bonfire tonight at Meskel Square in Addis Ababa, as well as across the country.
