Government Committed to Ensuring Lasting Benefits for Health Professionals, Says State Health Minister

The Ethiopian government is intensifying its efforts to ensure the long-term well-being and benefits of health professionals, according to state Health Minister Dr. Dereje Duguma. He stated that the government will continue to strengthen ongoing initiatives aimed at supporting the healthcare workforce.

During an interview with ETV, Dr. Dereje addressed recent actions by some health professionals in certain areas, asserting that such movements did not honor their professional oath. He emphasized that professionals should address their concerns through appropriate channels and by fulfilling their national responsibilities, rather than by stopping work. While acknowledging some disruption in services due to these events, he noted that healthcare services at all health institutions across the country have continued to operate robustly.

The state Minister firmly stated that halting health services is "absolutely unacceptable." He warned that professionals who violate this humanitarian principle and their professional oath by not reporting to work will face action in accordance with the law.

Dr. Dereje highlighted that the demands of health professionals are not new but have been longstanding issues. He explained that the government has been working diligently over the years to address these concerns. As an example, he cited the recently approved Health Administration Proclamation by the House of Peoples' Representatives, which he believes will progressively address the long-standing demands of health professionals.

He further elaborated that efforts are underway to implement provisions of the proclamation, including a system that ensures free healthcare services for health professionals and other related benefits. The state Minister underscored that various initiatives are being undertaken to support health professionals through enhanced benefits and improved working conditions.
