Unity through Sport: East African Police Chiefs Compete for Peace

The fifth East African Police Chiefs Union Sports Competition has kicked off at Shambel Abebe Bikila Stadium, commemorating 116 years of the Ethiopian Federal Police's commitment to public safety and justice.

This year, the competition is not just about sports; it aims to strengthen bonds between East African nations and promote peace across the region.

“The sports competition among the member states is designed to enhance cooperation beyond mere competition,” emphasized Commissioner General Demelash Gebremichael of the Ethiopian Federal Police.

He highlighted how the event brings together police forces from Ethiopia, Kenya, Rwanda, Uganda, Tanzania, South Sudan, and Djibouti, all united in a common goal: to foster peace and security through collaboration.

Over the past few years, the Ethiopian Federal Police has undergone significant reforms aimed at boosting safety and effectiveness.

Commissioner General Demelash noted, “These reforms have led to remarkable achievements in human resources, technology, crime prevention, and communication.”

He believes that these improvements have played a crucial role in ensuring the safety of the nation, allowing for stronger partnerships with neighboring countries.

As the excitement of the games builds, Demelash shared the broader vision behind the competition.

“The main objective is to strengthen relationships among these countries. We want to promote not only friendship but also mutual support and learning, encouraging future athletes to shine on greater platforms,” he said.

In line with this sentiment, Bosco Gahij, the Interpol Regional Office Representative in Nairobi, affirmed the significance of the competition.

“This is not simply a sports event; it plays a vital role in building regional ties,” he stated, stressing that such gatherings can help combat organized crime and terrorism by fostering cooperation among police forces.

The East African Police Chiefs Union Sports Competition underscores the importance of unity among these nations as they work together to address common challenges.

Scheduled to run until April 25, 2017, E.C., the event is an opportunity for police departments to not only showcase their athletic prowess but also reinforce their commitment to collaboration for a safer, more secure east Africa.
