The African Union Commission (AUC) has voiced its deep concern following reports of the detention of the First Vice President of the Republic of South Sudan, Riek Machar. In a statement released today, AUC Chairperson Mahmoud Ali Youssouf emphasized the critical need for all parties involved in South Sudan to de-escalate the current situation.
The African Union stressed the paramount importance of upholding the spirit and letter of the Revitalized Agreement on the Resolution of the Conflict in South Sudan (R-ARCSS), which remains the fundamental framework for achieving sustainable peace, stability, and national reconciliation in the country.
“The African Union urges all concerned parties to exercise maximum restraint and refrain from any actions that could further inflame tensions,” the statement underlined. The AUC also called for constructive dialogue as the means to resolve any outstanding issues through peaceful and legal channels.
Chairperson Youssouf emphasized that the well-being of the South Sudanese people must remain the top priority for all stakeholders. He stated that all efforts should be directed towards fostering an environment that supports lasting peace and development within the nation.
The African Union reiterated its unwavering solidarity with the people of South Sudan and reaffirmed its commitment to the full and timely implementation of the peace agreement. In this context, the statement added, “The AU remains ready to work closely with the Government of South Sudan, as well as regional and international partners, including the United Nations Mission in South Sudan (UNMISS) and the Intergovernmental Authority on Development (IGAD), to promote stability and inclusive governance in the country.”
Chairperson Youssouf called upon all parties in South Sudan to recommit to the core principles of dialogue, cooperation, and respect for human rights, highlighting these as essential pillars for building a peaceful and prosperous future for the nation.
In a move to actively address the situation, the AUC Chairperson announced the deployment of the AU Panel of the Wise to Juba. This initiative is part of the African Union's ongoing efforts to facilitate de-escalation and encourage a peaceful resolution to the reported tensions.
