Addis Ababa Leverages Technology to Build a Smart City

The Addis Ababa City Innovation and Technology Development Bureau announced that efforts are underway to make the operations of institutions technology-driven in order to expedite the city's journey towards becoming a smart city.

Dr. Tulu Tilahun, the Deputy Head of the Addis Ababa Innovation and Technology Development Bureau, mentioned that an eight-year strategic plan has been formulated and implementation has begun to transform the city into a smart city.

He noted that two years have passed since the implementation of the strategic plan began, and significant activities have been carried out during this time.

Among these, he stated that the development of digital technology to enhance the operations of institutions is one of them.

He also indicated that by enabling institutions to build and utilize digital technology, it has been possible to streamline service delivery.

For instance, he highlighted that the work initiated to support key institutions such as land administration, civil registration, and residency services with digital technology has been successful.

According to the Deputy Head of the Bureau, the corridor developments undertaken in the city play a vital role in the construction of the smart city.

He also mentioned that the development works being carried out in the city, including the corridor development, are increasing the city's international recognition and acceptance.

Aemro Kassa, the Information Communication Technology Director at the Addis Ababa Civil Registration and Residency Service Agency, for his part, recalled that the institution's previous operations faced frequent complaints regarding service delivery due to a lack of organized technology.

He stated that since 2016 E.C, following the development of digital technology, the institution has been providing services paperlessly.

Furthermore, he explained that by integrating the technology with other institutions, they have streamlined service delivery and significantly reduced inconvenience for residents.

He also indicated that a technologically linked relationship has been established with other institutions to further streamline service delivery, ENA learnt.
