Ethiopia Takes a Stand at BRICS, Pushing for a Development-Focused Agenda

Ethiopia has reaffirmed its commitment to multilateralism and sustainable development at a BRICS Sherpas and Sous-Sherpas meeting chaired by Brazilian President Lula da Silva, who outlined priorities including global health, AI governance, and economic reform. Ethiopia championed a development-focused BRICS agenda, emphasizing the need for predictable market access, improved development finance, infrastructure development, and quality investment.

Regarding global health, Ethiopia stressed addressing infrastructure gaps to mitigate public health risks. On climate change, Ethiopia showcased its Green Legacy Initiative and urged BRICS nations to fully implement UNFCCC commitments. In the AI sphere, Ethiopia advocated for capacity building in developing countries and responsible AI governance aligned with UN frameworks.

Beyond the formal sessions, Governor Mamo Mihretu engaged with BRICS and UAE Sherpas, discussing national priorities and avenues for enhanced bilateral cooperation. Ethiopia's participation underscores its dedication to a more inclusive and representative BRICS partnership.
