Ethiopia stands at a critical juncture in mitigating climate change, said UNDP-Ethiopia Resident Representative Samuel Gbaydee Doe.
He praised the country’s efforts, stating that Ethiopia is on the right track in tackling climate change. He reaffirmed UNDP’s commitment to working alongside other partners to support Ethiopia’s green initiatives.
Ethiopia is intensifying its fight against climate change with a bold vision for Nationally Determined Contributions (NDC) 3.0, aiming for an implementable and investable climate strategy. Speaking at a high-level event, Seyoum Mekonen, State Minister of Planning and Development, highlighted Ethiopia’s urgent climate challenges, ongoing initiatives, and future strategies to bolster resilience and sustainable development.
Seyoum emphasized that climate action is a shared responsibility: “The fight against climate change is not just the government’s task—it requires every citizen, stakeholder, and development partner to join forces.”
Aklilu Fikreselassie from the World Resources Institute (WRI) highlighted Ethiopia’s alignment with the Paris Agreement, recognizing its Nationally Determined Contributions (NDC.3) plan.
Gloria Namazzi, NDCP Country Engagement Specialist underscored commended Ethiopia’s dedication to sustainable land management, a green economy, and low-carbon emission strategy.
Ethiopia has been taking bold initiatives to fight climate change, said World Bank Group representative Dawit Wubshet (PhD.)
In 2021, Ethiopia set a bold target of reducing greenhouse gas emissions by 68% by 2030 under its second NDC. Now, the country is developing NDC 3.0, ensuring it is not only ambitious but also actionable and investment-friendly, Seyoum Explained.
International partners, including the World Bank and UNDP, reiterated their readiness to contribute to Ethiopia’s climate resilience initiatives.
They emphasized that tackling climate change requires a concerted effort among government institutions, private sector actors, and international stakeholders.
