Ethiopian Electric Power announced that 265 megawatts of power are being supplied daily to Kenya based on the power sales agreement signed between Ethiopia and Kenya.
Ethiopian Electric Power stated that the Ethio-Kenya 500 kV converter station is playing a significant role in connecting East Africa through power.
The station commenced operations in 2014 E.C. According to Mekonnen Kasse, a maintenance and operation expert at the station, the facility receives power from the Wolayita Sodo Number Two distribution station through four 400 kV incoming lines and transmits it using 12 converter transformers and 1,680 thyristors.
The station transmits power through two poles with a carrying capacity of 2000 megawatts and a 1,060-kilometer transmission line stretching from Ethiopia to Kenya.
According to Mekonnen, based on the power sales agreement with Kenya, currently 200 megawatts are being supplied for 18 hours a day, specifically until 6:00 PM, and an additional 65 megawatts are supplied during the remaining 6 hours, ENA reported.
He also mentioned that the station has the capacity to accommodate the increasing power supply as per the agreement and to achieve the plan to transmit power to Tanzania.
Mekonnen stated that work is underway to continue the contribution to the advancement of continental power interconnection by ensuring reliable power transmission following future power sales agreements with other countries.
