Ministry Wishes Happy Africa Day

The Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the Federal Democratic Republic of Ethiopia has wished a Happy Africa Day. It has said that it is a day “to celebrate our common cultural legacy, unity, and strength as Africans. It is a moment for us to contemplate our shared experiences and recommit ourselves to constructing a fairer, more prosperous, and united Africa.”

This year’s Africa Day is being commemorated under the theme "Education Fit for the 21st Century."

In his message on the occasion of the commemoration of the Birth of the Organization of African Unity (OAU), Moussa Faki Mahamat noted that Africa has freed itself from the yoke of colonialism and the appalling system of Apartheid.

Africa Day, which we are celebrating today is certainly, an opportune moment for reflection, certainly to assess how far we have come, but also to reflect on the road ahead, African Union Commission (AUC) Chairperson Moussa Faki Mahamat said.

Africa Day is observed annually on May 25 to celebrate the achievements of the Organization of African Unity (OAU), the predecessor of the African Union (AU), from its creation on May 25, 1963.

The day is commemorated to acknowledge the role of the continental bloc in the fight against colonialism and the progress Africa has made, while reflecting on the common challenges Africa faces in a global environment, according to the AU.
