Millions Find Employment as Nation Prioritizes Job Creation, Skills Development

A significant milestone in job creation has been announced, with over 4.5 million employment opportunities generated during the 2017 Ethiopian fiscal year. Muferihat Kamil, the Minister of Labor and Skills, detailed the extensive efforts in a recent interview.

The Minister confirmed that this impressive figure includes 3.4 million jobs created by April of the fiscal year, encompassing both domestic and international placements. Breaking down the numbers, Muferihat reported that approximately 4 million jobs were created within the country, while some 503,000 citizens secured employment abroad, collectively benefiting 4.5 million individuals.

Emphasizing the integrity of the data, the Minister stated that job creation reports undergo stringent quality control and verification processes. To ensure transparency and accessibility, this crucial information is now being recorded on the national labor market information system, making it readily available to the public.

Muferihat attributed part of this success to the proactive introduction of new curricula in recent years, specifically designed to meet the evolving demands of various job sectors. This strategic alignment of education with industry needs has played a vital role in the positive outcomes.

She further noted a consistent trend, with an average of over 3 million citizens gaining employment opportunities annually in recent years. Complementing this, more than 3 million individuals receive short-term and medium-term training each year, boosting the workforce's capabilities.

The Minister also highlighted the robust contribution of the private sector in generating a substantial number of jobs and the successful establishment of a skill-based framework for employer-employee relations.
