Getachew Reda, Head of the Tigray Interim Administration, Urges Federal Government Intervention to Restore Order

Amidst a worsening crisis in Tigray, the Head of the Interim Administration, Getachew Reda, has called upon the Federal Government of Ethiopia to intervene and address the escalating security concerns. While acknowledging that a formal, legally-grounded request for federal intervention hasn't been initiated due to the absence of functional councils at both regional and federal levels, Getachew emphasized that the Federal Government cannot afford to remain passive.

Getachew Reda clarified that seeking federal intervention is not synonymous with initiating war. He noted the Federal Government's understandable caution to avoid further conflict in Tigray. However, he stressed that the recent withdrawal of federal forces from the region has created a security vacuum, allowing disruptive elements to operate unchecked.

According to Getachew, these lawless forces are currently destabilizing Tigray. While he believes a strengthened regional police force could manage the situation, the immediate need is for the Federal Government to bridge the capacity gap and restore law and order. He pointed out that the Tigray region's current operational budget is already heavily reliant on Federal Government support, highlighting the existing interdependence.

Getachew explained that internal challenges within Tigray are hindering the Federal Government's ability to provide necessary assistance, exacerbating the crisis. He also expressed concern over the insufficient progress in disarmament and rehabilitation efforts, largely due to the obstructionist tactics of these disruptive forces.

These groups, he stated, are actively undermining the interim administration by labeling cooperation with the Federal Government as "treasonous" and resorting to intimidation. Paradoxically, while publicly denouncing collaboration, these same elements are allegedly lobbying the Prime Minister directly, seeking positions of power.

Despite these challenges, Getachew Reda believes that the people of Tigray understand the benefits of close cooperation with the Federal Government and the Prime Minister for the region's stability and progress. He underscored that working together is in the best interest of the Tigrayan people.
