The African Union has urged the United States to reconsider its decision to withdraw from the World Health Organization (WHO).
African Union Commission Chairperson Moussa Faki Mahamat called on the US to re-evaluate its decision to leave the WHO. He expressed his disappointment at the US's intention to withdraw and expressed hope that the decision would be reversed, allowing the US to remain a member.
In a statement on the matter, the African Union highlighted the US's early and strong support for the establishment of the Africa Centres for Disease Control and Prevention (Africa CDC). The AU emphasized the world's reliance on the WHO to achieve the common goal of securing global public health security, especially now more than ever. Given this, and the US's role as a key founding member, the AU urged the US to reconsider its planned withdrawal from the organization.
