Ethiopia to Host International Symposium on Astronomical Heritage

Addis Ababa, Ethiopia - The International Astronomical Union (IAU) Symposium on Dark Sky and Astronomical Heritage will take place in Addis Ababa from November 13-17, 2023.

Themed "Dark Sky and Astronomical Heritage in Boosting Astro-tourism around the World," the second symposium to be held in Ethiopia and the fourth organized in Africa by the IAU.

The symposium will bring together scientists, policymakers, and stakeholders worldwide.

Co-organizer Mirjana Povic said Ethiopia has huge potential for dark sky tourism.

With over two-thirds of Africa's higher mountain plateaus and ideal dry, clear conditions, Ethiopia is poised to lead in astro-tourism.

National parks like Simien Mountains and Bale Mountains offer exceptional dark sky viewing.

The Ministry of Tourism's Bizualem Getu said the conference will provide insights on developing dark sky tourism in Ethiopia.

Over 200 participants from around the world are expected to attend.
