Guangzhou Automobile Group Co Ltd (GAC Group), a prominent Chinese automaker, has officially launched its electric vehicle (EV) brand in Ethiopia, introducing two of its latest models to the East African nation. The company unveiled its AION Y and ES9 electric vehicles at a launch event held in Addis Ababa, the Ethiopian capital, on Saturday.
Speaking at the launch, Zeleke Temesgen, Commissioner of the Ethiopian Investment Commission, highlighted the Ethiopian government's proactive measures to encourage the adoption of EVs as part of its broader strategy to accelerate the country's transition to electric mobility.
"The Ethiopian government has already implemented a ban on the production, import, and assembly of gasoline-powered cars, positioning Ethiopia as an exceptionally promising market for reputable EV manufacturers like GAC Group," Commissioner Zeleke stated.
Expressing appreciation for GAC Group's commitment to introducing its EV brand to Ethiopia, the Commissioner urged the company to consider establishing a local manufacturing plant. This, he noted, would allow GAC Group to capitalize on the favorable investment climate, tap into the significant market opportunities within Ethiopia, and further contribute to the nation's green mobility ambitions.
Bareo Hassen, Ethiopia's State Minister of Transport and Logistics, reiterated the government's strong aspiration to achieve green mobility "in the shortest time possible," emphasizing the dual goals of energy conservation and bolstering the national economy.
As a testament to Ethiopia's commitment to EV adoption, over 100,000 electric vehicles are currently operating on the country's roads. The government aims to significantly scale this up, targeting 500,000 EVs within the next decade to replace a substantial portion of the existing fossil fuel-powered fleet.
The Ministry of Transport and Logistics further outlined Ethiopia's ongoing efforts to expand EV production capabilities and the installation of a robust public charging infrastructure. The government is also actively offering support and various incentives to private investors in the EV sector, including the provision of free or leased land for those involved in EV after-sales services.
Wei Haigang, President of GAC International, announced that the company, in collaboration with its partner Huajian Group, will not only sell electric vehicles but also establish necessary charging infrastructure and eventually initiate local assembly operations within Ethiopia.
Acknowledging Ethiopia's considerable potential within the burgeoning EV market, Wei affirmed GAC Group's future intentions to engage in local EV production. This strategic move aims to fully leverage the vast market opportunities and actively support Ethiopia's transition towards a sustainable electric mobility ecosystem. The story is from China Daily.
