Properly leveraging artificial intelligence (AI) within the healthcare sector holds the key to delivering high-quality services across Africa, according to Foreign Minister Dr. Gideon Timothewos. His remarks came during a panel discussion titled "What can Africa learn from international artificial intelligence policies, guidelines, and implementations?" at the Ethiopian Technology Expo 2025.
Dr. Gideon emphasized the significant potential of AI to transform healthcare delivery, particularly in addressing existing challenges and budget limitations. He asserted that the judicious application of AI could extend quality healthcare services to even the most remote rural communities.
Speaking on behalf of the African Union, Lerate Mtabogi stressed the urgency for African nations to proactively develop policies and implement measures to ensure equitable access to the benefits of AI for their citizens within the next two years. Mtabogi further advocated for a unified continental AI strategy that would be accessible to all member states, emphasizing the importance of collaborative efforts to overcome capacity constraints within the continent and drive transformative change.
United Nations Secretary-General's Envoy on Technology, Amanideep Singh, lauded the timeliness and significance of the panel discussion. He noted that inclusive dialogues at both continental and national levels are crucial in shaping future policy directions. The UN representative highlighted the global focus on making AI accessible to all, emphasizing its potential to shape a fair and sustainable digital future through universally available services.
