"Tana Nesh II" Arrives in Ethiopia, Set to Revolutionize Lake Tana Transport

A newly acquired passenger ferry, the "Tana Nesh II," has arrived in Ethiopia after commencing its voyage from Djibouti's Doraleh port on March 30, 2017 E.C. (approximately May 8, 2025 G.C.). The vessel crossed the Ethiopian border yesterday, marking a significant step in bolstering the nation's water transport capabilities.

Authorities indicated that the ferry's considerable size contributed to an extended transit period. The "Tana Nesh II" is slated to reach Gorgora port on Lake Tana within the next two months, where it is anticipated to commence operations.

Overcoming logistical challenges during its journey required substantial collaboration between Ethiopian and Djiboutian government entities, who worked to address difficult road conditions.

Purchased by the Ethiopian Maritime Transport and Logistics Service Enterprise, the "Tana Nesh II" is a modern ferry intended for passenger transport on Lake Tana. This acquisition underscores Ethiopia's broader initiative to enhance water transport infrastructure, particularly in the Lake Tana region.

The introduction of this ferry is expected to provide a vital and efficient transportation alternative for both local communities and tourists, thereby fostering economic development in the surrounding areas.

The "Tana Nesh II" measures 38 meters in length, weighs 150 metric tons, and boasts a passenger capacity of up to 200 individuals.
