Ethiopia’s Industrial Production Hits 61% as 55 New Factories Launch

Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed announced today that Ethiopia’s industrial production capacity has surged to 61%, driven by the operational launch of 55 new factories during the current fiscal year.

In an address to the House of People's Representatives, the Prime Minister underscored transformative progress across key economic sectors. The agricultural sector, bolstered by strategic investments, now positions Ethiopia as Africa’s leading wheat producer. A record 7.9 million hectares of land have been cultivated for wheat production under the Meher farming season and summer irrigation programs, with an anticipated harvest exceeding 300 million quintals.

The nation’s coffee exports also shone brightly, generating USD 1.2 billion in revenue over the past eight months, alongside advancements in tea production.

To address industrial challenges, a high-level steering committee established under the Prime Minister’s Office has prioritized resolving foreign currency shortages and power supply issues. These efforts have yielded a 50% year-on-year increase in electricity provision to industries and a marked rise in domestic cement production, now poised to meet local demand and expand export potential.

“Our focus on structural reforms and sectoral synergy is unlocking Ethiopia’s industrial prowess,” said PM Abiy, emphasizing sustained momentum toward economic self-sufficiency and export diversification.
