Welthungerhilfe (WHH) has reaffirmed its commitment to improving Water, Sanitation, and Hygiene (WASH) in Ethiopia.
Yousaf Jogezai, Regional Representative for the Horn of Africa at WHH, emphasized the organization’s dedication to advancing WASH initiatives in the country.
He noted that as of 2023, only 52% of Ethiopians have access to basic drinking water, while just 9% have access to basic sanitation.
“We will continue supporting the government’s national plans, such as the Sekota Declaration, the Food Systems Framework, the One WASH initiative, and climate-resilient programs,” Jogezai stated. WHH remains committed to support government agencies and donors to strengthen these initiatives, ensuring sustainable water and sanitation solutions across Ethiopia.

Speaking at the occasion, Ferdinand Von Weyhe, Deputy Head of Mission at the German Embassy to Ethiopia, reiterated Germany’s strong commitment to WASH initiatives. He praised the program’s success in providing over 280,000 people in the East Gojjam Zone, Amhara Region, with access to safe water through the construction of 163 water supply facilities.
Germany, in partnership with WHH, ORDA, and the Ethiopian government, continues to support WASH initiatives aligned with national priorities.
Von Weyhe emphasized the need to integrate WASH with sectors like health, education, and agriculture to maximize impact. He also called for continued investment in sustainable WASH solutions, community engagement, and capacity building to ensure lasting improvements.
Asfaw Dingamo (PhD) , state Minister of water supply at the Ministry of water and Energy, noted Ethiopia has made significant strides in water access but still faces challenges in sanitation, emphasizing the need for sustainable WASH solutions.
He stressed the importance of sustainable WASH solutions, integrating them with food systems and climate resilience.
“The WASH program is crucial, and collaboration at all levels is key,” he said. “Moving forward, we must strengthen governance, increase investment, and develop climate-resilient solutions to ensure access for vulnerable populations.”
Alemayehu Wassie (PhD), Executive Director of ORDA Ethiopia, expressed appreciation for WHH’s long-standing partnership, which has been instrumental in ORDA Ethiopia’s transition from relief efforts to sustainable development.
"WHH has not only supported us in developing water resources but has also introduced advanced drilling technology, significantly enhancing our ability to deliver high-quality services," he stated.
WHH, active in Ethiopia for over 50 years, continues to implement sustainable solutions such as solar-powered water systems and community-led sanitation initiatives.
