Ethiopia is intensifying its efforts to manage migration issues effectively, seeking enhanced cooperation with the International Center for Migration Policy Development (ICMPD).
State Minister of Foreign Affairs, Ambassador Mesganu Arga Moach, met today with Monica Zanette, Head of the ICMPD, to discuss avenues for strengthening collaboration.
The primary focus of the meeting revolved around deepening the existing partnership between Ethiopia and the ICMPD. Recognizing the growing complexity of migration flows and their impact on both sending and receiving countries, Ambassador Mesganu emphasized the need for innovative and comprehensive policy solutions.
A key proposal discussed during the meeting was the establishment of an ICMPD Country Office in Addis Ababa. This strategic move would signify a strengthened commitment to addressing migration challenges in Ethiopia and the broader Horn of Africa region.
An ICMPD presence in Addis Ababa would facilitate closer collaboration, knowledge sharing, and capacity building, ultimately enabling Ethiopia to develop and implement more effective migration policies.
Ambassador Mesganu highlighted Ethiopia's commitment to addressing the root causes of irregular migration and promoting safe, orderly, and regular migration pathways.
He expressed his confidence that a strengthened partnership with the ICMPD would contribute significantly to achieving these goals.
Monica Zanette reaffirmed the ICMPD's commitment to supporting Ethiopia's efforts in managing migration.
She lauded Ethiopia's proactive approach and expressed her enthusiasm for exploring the possibility of establishing a Country Office in Addis Ababa.
Further discussions are expected to take place in the coming weeks to explore the logistics and modalities of establishing the office.
This potential collaboration underscores the growing recognition of Ethiopia's role as a key player in regional migration dynamics.
