Ethiopia Digitizes Drug Supply Chain for Improved Healthcare

Ethiopia is implementing a digitalized, transparent, and efficient drug supply and distribution system, according to Health Minister Dr. Mekdes Daba. Various international partner organizations have reviewed and observed the Ethiopian Pharmaceutical Supply Service's operational system.

Dr. Mekdes explained that numerous changes, from policy level down, have been made to improve healthcare service delivery. The implementation of a transparent and accountable system using a digital platform has begun. Specifically, a technology-based system has been implemented to address previously existing challenges in drug supply and distribution, creating a more efficient distribution chain. Efforts are underway to prevent delays in drug counting and distribution times.

Dr. Abdulkadir Gelgelo, Director General of the Ethiopian Pharmaceutical Supply Service, stated that the service provides drug supply and distribution services to 18,000 health facilities nationwide. Partner organizations are also providing support for medicines related to HIV/AIDS, malaria, tuberculosis, and similar diseases.

The recent visit aimed to strengthen collaboration by observing the service's operations, drug management, and distribution. The service has implemented a new system for delivering drugs directly to health facilities, providing traceability and ensuring timely patient access.

Among the participating partner organization leaders, Tabani Mafosa, Chief Country Officer for Vaccine Supply at Gavi, stated that Ethiopia's development of a modern drug management and distribution chain is remarkable. Mark Eddington, Head of the Global Fund's Support Management Division, noted that the Ethiopian Pharmaceutical Supply Service has significantly improved its operations compared to what they knew five years ago. According to ENA, he highlighted the service's significant transformation and improvement, and expressed their commitment to continuing their partnership with Ethiopia.
