Addis Ababa's Transportation Bureau has announced, that it is working to replace older, fuel-powered vehicles with electric vehicles. The Bureau Head, Yabibal Addis, stated that aging, fuel-powered vehicles are a major contributor to the city's high carbon emissions. Both the federal government and the city administration are prioritizing the transition to electric vehicles, he explained.
Electric vehicles are seen as a way to provide cleaner and safer transportation services. The official noted that electric public transportation is already in service in the city and that this initiative is expanding to include private vehicles.
To further reduce traffic accidents and improve transportation safety, the Bureau also emphasized the importance of promoting "motorless" transportation, such as walking and cycling. The city's corridor development projects are prioritizing pedestrian and bicycle paths, reflecting this commitment.
