Nigerian Police Uses Tear Gas, Curfew as Anti-Gov’t Protests Escalate in States

The 10-day nationwide protests against economic hardship which started on Thursday turned erroneous in some states.

Police tear-gassed the protesters as the demonstrations escalated.

The protests turned awry in some states when hoodlums took advantage of the demonstrations to loot and maim.

The quests of the protesters include the restoration of petrol subsidies and the forex regime, addressing food shortages, unemployment and government officials wasteful spending.

At first, the protests in all states were peaceful; however, hoodlums who took advantage of the demonstrations looted the newly built Nigeria Communication Commission (NCC) Industrial Park in Kano. The ICT centre, scheduled for commissioning next week, was thereafter set ablaze.

Some states saw the after-effects of the protests. There were looting and violence that governments in Kano, Borno, Yobe, Katsina and Nasarawa states imposed curfews.

Nigeria’s nationwide protest against economic hardship will continue till August 10 across all states of the Federation.
