Ethiopia Embarks on Journey to Develop Nuclear Energy Infrastructure.

Ethiopia's Minister of Innovation and Technology announced significant strides towards establishing a centre for nuclear science and technology, reaffirming the government's commitment to the peaceful utilization of nuclear energy.

Yesterday, the 35th Technical Working Group Meeting of the African Regional Cooperative Agreement for Research, Development, and Training Related to Nuclear Science and Technology (AFRA) took place in Addis Ababa.

In his opening remarks, Innovation and Technology Minister Dr. Belete Molla stated that Ethiopia is exploring the potential of nuclear power for electricity generation and aims to establish an institute dedicated to the sustainable management of this sector.

"We are committing resources to research and development, building essential infrastructure, and formulating policies and programs to foster innovation among businesses and entrepreneurs across all sectors. The Ministry of Innovation and Technology is steadfast in its dedication to promoting the peaceful application of nuclear energy and advancing a strong, sustainable nuclear program," said Dr. Belete.

The Minister highlighted that the AFRA technical working group meeting aims to enhance technical collaboration among member states and the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA). The IAEA provides technical, financial, and administrative support to assist member states.

Since joining AFRA in 1990, Ethiopia has actively participated in various economic sectors, including agriculture, food security, human health, water resource management, environment, and industry. Recently, Ethiopia has engaged in research through initiatives in human resource development, equipment procurement, and donations, as noted by Dr. Belete.

AFRA Chairperson Abdulhamid Mellah called for African countries to collaborate in utilizing nuclear energy for peaceful purposes, emphasizing that its implementation could provide electricity to hundreds of millions of Africans.

Intra-African cooperation is crucial for the practical application of nuclear science and technology for peaceful purposes. The chairperson appealed to countries not yet part of AFRA to join hands with member states.
