Ethiopia's Refugee Hosting Efforts Earn UN Praise, Support

Ethiopia's commitment to hosting refugees has been lauded by the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees, Filippo Grandi.

During a meeting with Ethiopian President Taye Atseke Selassie at the Grand National Palace, Grandi praised Ethiopia for its substantial efforts in welcoming individuals fleeing conflict and instability in neighbouring countries.

Ethiopia is currently home to a large number of refugees, particularly from South Sudan, Sudan, and other regions facing turmoil.

Grandi emphasized the importance of Ethiopia’s role as a refuge for those in need, stating, “The efforts Ethiopia is making to welcome and host refugees are commendable.”

He further assured that international support for these initiatives would be strengthened in response to Ethiopia’s proactive stance.

The discussions between Grandi and President Taye covered a broad spectrum of topics related to refugee welfare, including the challenges faced by displaced populations and the need for enhanced support systems.

For her part, Teiba Hassan, Director General of the Ethiopian Refugee and Repatriation Service, who was present at the meeting, described the talks as fruitful. “We discussed various issues impacting refugees in Ethiopia and explored ways to bolster support for their needs,” Teiba stated.

Grandi’s visit comes at a time when Ethiopia is grappling with a rising influx of refugees due to ongoing conflicts in neighbouring countries.

The UNHCR has recognized Ethiopia as one of the largest refugee-hosting countries in Africa, underscoring the nation's critical role in providing sanctuary amid regional crises.

In addition to expressing gratitude for Ethiopia's hospitality, Grandi highlighted the need for continued international collaboration.

He pledged to work diligently to ensure that the global community acknowledges Ethiopia’s contributions and offers necessary support. “We must mobilize resources and awareness to assist Ethiopia in its remarkable efforts,” he added.

On the occasion, it was stated that as Ethiopia continues to navigate complex humanitarian challenges, the partnership between the nation and international organizations like the UNHCR remains vital.

The commitment demonstrated by both parties signals a hopeful path forward for refugees seeking safety and stability in an increasingly uncertain world.
