Addis Ababa's Recycling Efforts Yield Over 1.271 Billion Birr

The Addis Ababa City Solid Waste Management Agency announced that over 1.271 billion Birr has been generated from recycling solid waste in Addis Ababa during the first nine months of the current budget year.

Mulat Tegne, Deputy Director-General of the Agency, stated that extensive work has been undertaken in recent years to transform solid waste into a valuable resource.

He noted that a significant change in waste handling and disposal has been observed since legal associations were organized and a subsidy system was established to enable them to commence operations.

More than 334 associations are currently engaged in recycling activities, with 53 of them specializing in the preparation of natural fertilizers.

He stated that the majority of the solid waste collected in the capital over the past nine months has been successfully channeled for recycling purposes.

Mulat further added that efforts to recycle and reuse plastic materials, paper products, and electrical components are being strengthened and continued.

Through these waste processing and recycling initiatives, over 1.271 billion Birr has been generated.

He also mentioned that the solid waste recycling and processing initiative has successfully created 1,079 job opportunities for citizens.

Mulat noted that the agency is working in close coordination with stakeholders to make the capital city beautiful, clean, and globally competitive.

According to ENA, he particularly highlighted that the ongoing corridor and green area development work has significantly contributed to preventing the indiscriminate dumping of construction waste, which was previously discarded in various locations.
