Ethiopia is placing a strong emphasis on expanding its access to both continental and international markets as a key strategy to enhance its export performance, the Ministry of Trade and Regional Integration announced.
The ministry's focus was highlighted during a recent panel discussion held as part of the third Ethiopian Tamirt (Made in Ethiopia) Expo in Addis Ababa. The discussion convened under the theme, "Expanding International Export Market Options for the Manufacturing Industry and Joining International Trade Systems."
State Minister of Trade and Regional Integration Endalew Mekonnen, addressing the panel, detailed the government's multi-faceted approach to boosting exports. He identified improving essential infrastructure for product quality, promoting Ethiopian goods abroad, and actively expanding market destinations as key priority areas.
The State Minister elaborated on efforts to broaden market access, citing initiatives across bilateral and multilateral platforms, engagement at the continental level through the African Continental Free Trade Area (AfCFTA), and the ongoing process for Ethiopia to join the World Trade Organization (WTO).
Regarding the WTO accession, Endalew stated that Ethiopia has successfully navigated five negotiation stages. He affirmed that the process will continue with reinforced efforts, guided by the imperative to safeguard the nation's interests throughout the remaining steps.
Highlighting opportunities within Africa, the state minister announced that preparations are nearing completion for pilot trade activities under the AfCFTA agreement, which has been signed by 52 countries. He underscored the significant potential the free trade area presents for the manufacturing sector, noting the over $3 trillion market it represents.
Finally, the state minister stressed the critical role of leveraging science and technology for brand development. He indicated that this focus is essential for improving the global market accessibility of Ethiopian products, ENA learned.
