PM Abiy: “Peace, National Interest and Unity Are the Ultimate Mandate of Our Police Force”

Prime Minister Dr. Abiy Ahmed has emphasized that Ethiopia’s Federal Police must remain firmly committed to upholding national peace, defending the country’s interest, and safeguarding its unity. The Premier delivered his remarks during the closing ceremony of the 116th Ethiopian Police Day celebrations held at Meskel Square.

Addressing members of the Federal Police and invited guests, Prime Minister Abiy highlighted the significance of the institution's long-standing presence, noting that "116 years is no small achievement for any organization." He pointed out that many nations that are now recognized globally were not even formed or named a century ago.

However, he cautioned that longevity alone does not guarantee relevance. “Surviving for over a century is impressive, but without reform and the ability to adapt to the times, the number alone becomes meaningless,” he stressed.

The Prime Minister argued that institutions do not progress by chance rather, progress is achieved through hard work, technological advancement, and adaptability. He acknowledged the significant reforms carried out within Ethiopia’s peace and security institutions in recent years but underscored that continued preparedness, discipline, and readiness are now more essential than ever.

“Given the current global security landscape, every officer must be equipped not just with skills but with purpose and commitment,” Dr. Abiy said, urging the police force not to rest on past accomplishments but to strive for greater heights.

He reaffirmed the government's expectation from the police, which is “to safeguard Ethiopia’s peace, protect national interests, and defend our unity.” He further noted that Ethiopia, as a diverse country of over 130 million people, has the potential to ensure stability and prosperity through unity.

“The goal of our enemies is to divide and isolate us,” he warned. “But our objective must be to understand our national interests, maintain peace, stand in solidarity, and work together with our fraternal neighbors.”

The Prime Minister concluded his speech with a passionate call to patriotic duty, stating that if these efforts are not enough, Ethiopians must be ready, like their forefathers, to defend national interests and unity with a spirit of heroism.
