The 116th Ethiopian Police Day is being commemorated today with a grand closing ceremony held at Meskel Square in the capital, Addis Ababa.
High-ranking government officials, leaders of various police institutions, and delegates from BRICS member states and other countries have gathered to attend the event. The ceremony marks the conclusion of a series of nationwide activities and celebrations honoring the Ethiopian Federal Police and its contributions.
In the lead-up to today’s event, the 5th East African Police Chiefs Sports Competition was held from April 27 to May 3, 2025, at Abebe Bikila Stadium. Member states of the Eastern Africa Police Chiefs Cooperation Organization (EAPCCO), including Ethiopia, Kenya, Rwanda, Uganda, Tanzania, South Sudan, and Djibouti, participated in various sports disciplines. Ethiopia emerged victorious in both the men’s and women’s categories, taking home the championship and gold medals. Rwanda and Kenya secured second and third place, respectively.

Additionally, from May 1 to May 3, a national police symposium and exhibition took place at the Addis Ababa Science Museum. The symposium highlighted the history and reform achievements of the Ethiopian Police Force, including institutional reforms, human resource development, crime prevention and investigation, military infrastructure, technological advancements, healthcare services, and the unveiling of a new standard federal police uniform.
The exhibition also featured the Ethiopian Police University, the Heroism Center, and other key reform initiatives, offering the public a closer look at the evolving role of the police force in society.
Today’s closing ceremony includes a military parade and various cultural displays, symbolizing the strength, discipline, and ongoing transformation of the Ethiopian Federal Police.
The 116th Police Day celebrations reflect Ethiopia’s commitment to a modern, effective, and community-focused policing system, while also fostering regional cooperation through events like the EAPCCO sports competition.
