New facilities, including an expanded primary school building and a girls' latrine block funded by Japan, have been officially handed over today at the Model Primary School in Dawro Zone, South West Ethiopia Peoples' Region (SWEPR), during a handover ceremony.
The project, which received approximately USD 76,000 in grant assistance through Japan’s Grant Assistance for Grassroots and Human Security Projects (GGP), supported the construction of a new furnished building accommodating four classrooms. It also included a girls’ latrine block featuring six separate rooms.
This expansion is expected to provide a more comfortable learning environment for around 500 existing students and improve sanitation for 240 girl students.

Representing the Embassy of Japan, ORI Kaori attended the ceremony and expressed hope that the project would improve the quality of education and the sanitary environment, thereby contributing to a brighter future for the children at the school.
Local officials present at the handover included Asefaw Desalegn, Chief Administrator of Dawro Zone; Dr. Habtamu Demise, Chief Administrator of Mareka Woreda Administration Office; and Eyael Tadese, Mayor of Waka Town Administration.
The GGP program, first introduced by Japan in 1989, has supported over 450 projects in Ethiopia across various sectors such as education, healthcare, women’s empowerment, and other basic human needs.
