Ethiopia Highlights Diplomatic Gains over Past Nine Months, Restores Ties with Somalia

Ethiopia has actively pursued significant diplomatic engagements over the past nine months, achieving notable progress in strengthening bilateral relations, restoring ties with Somalia, and gaining international recognition on key issues, according to Ambassador Nebiyat Getachew, spokesperson for the Ministry of Foreign Affairs.

During a press briefing today, Ambassador Nebiyat detailed the ministry's diplomatic activities and outcomes. He emphasized Ethiopia's commitment to safeguarding its national interests within the current global geopolitical landscape.

A key achievement highlighted by the spokesperson was the successful restoration of normal diplomatic relations with Somalia. Ambassador Nebiyat stated that efforts to resolve previous misunderstandings and tensions had yielded positive results. This development marks a significant step in regional cooperation.

Furthermore, Ethiopia has made strides in gaining increased international recognition regarding its aspiration for access to the sea. While the specifics were not detailed, this indicates progress in a long-standing strategic objective for the nation.

Ambassador Nebiyat also outlined the ministry's efforts in strengthening bilateral ties with neighboring countries through high-level visits, joint commission meetings, and political consultations.

In terms of diplomatic agreements, the spokesperson announced that 11 agreements were ratified by the House of People’s Representatives, while an additional 6 agreements and 33 memoranda of understanding were signed over the past nine months.

Economic diplomacy has also been a focus, with the ongoing reform programs in Ethiopia enhancing the country’s capacity and influence. Ambassador Nebiyat noted significant investor interest, with 533 companies conducting pre-investment visits to Ethiopia during the reported period.

The ministry also highlighted its citizen-centered diplomacy efforts, successfully repatriating 92,043 Ethiopian citizens, primarily from the Middle East, who were facing difficult circumstances.

Ambassador Nebiyat concluded his briefing by stating that he also provided insights on other current national, regional, and global issues, although specific details were not immediately available. This comprehensive overview underscores Ethiopia's active role in regional and international affairs over the past nine months.
