Bright Project to Enter Full- Scale Implementation in Abay, Awash, Tekze Basins

Bright Project, part of the Integrated Water Resources Management Program, is to be fully implemented in the Abay, Awash, and Tekeze Basins, the Ethiopian Ministry of Water and Energy announced Tuesday after holding a stakeholder discussion.

Bright Project is a project that implements a Basin Information System that collects water quantity, quality, and general watershed information in five basins in 11 regions: the Abay, Awash, Tekeze, Omo Gibe, and Semt Valley basins, and works to protect, conserve, and develop the entire basin.

Opening the discussion, State Minister for Water Resources Management at the Ministry of Water and Energy, Abraha Adugna, said that the Bright Project will effectively implement the integrated water resources management plan prepared at the national level.

The project is a system in which a common platform is prepared and managed in a coordinated manner, from the federal to the district structure and with the relevant stakeholders, and the nature of the basin region is assessed and managed in a coordinated manner, he said.

Abraham also said that the project, when implemented jointly in the Abay, Awash, and Tekeze basins, will enable fundamental changes to be made by having a common vision, leading with a coordinated plan and approach.

The minister of state underscored the need to pursue a direct participatory approach from various stakeholders and to properly implement the work.

Bright Project is a five-year project being implemented with financial support from the European Union and the Netherlands government.
